Workplace drug and alcohol testing is a hot topic. But it’s also one that needs to be implemented correctly, otherwise it can cause more harm than good.

While some employees may feel that such programmes are in place to “catch them out” and punish them, that’s not the aim. Every employer has a duty of care to its employees. When dealing with situations involving drug and alcohol abuse, they can protect employees from accidents, increase productivity, and highlight issues that could impact on new employees before they join.

Different types of test, though, are appropriate at different times. In our latest video, which you can watch below, you’ll learn how best to test in three different situations (pre-employment, random/with-cause/post-accident and continual monitoring), as well as how to draw up a drug and alcohol testing policy that ensures everyone is fully informed about what the programme involves.

There’s no denying that stamping out drug and alcohol misuse in the workplace has a number of benefits, and that a formal testing programme can help to resolve the issue. However, with false accusations (or false positives) impacting seriously on an employee’s livelihood and reputation, it’s vital that things are done by the (clearly defined) book.
