Hair strand testing identifies cocaine exposure in infant via breast milk

Challenge

Social services contacted us to conduct a hair strand test on an infant whose mother was suspected of heavy drug use. The concern was that the mother’s drug use, particularly cocaine, could have been passed onto the child through breastfeeding.

Solution

To assess the situation, we performed hair strand testing on the baby to determine whether the child had been exposed to drugs over time. Additionally, we conducted an external contamination test to establish whether the child had been in direct contact with cocaine or if the exposure was only through ingestion via the mother’s breast milk.

Result

The external contamination test came back negative, confirming that the baby had not been in direct contact with the drug. However, the hair strand analysis revealed the presence of cocaine, indicating that the drug had been ingested through the mother’s milk. This crucial evidence helped clarify the source of the infant’s drug exposure and played a significant role in the ongoing investigation, supporting social services in making informed decisions regarding the child’s safety and well-being.

At Cansford Labs, we understand that every case is unique, and so is the testing needs that come with it. That's why our hair strand testing provides a more in-depth analysis, offering not only the presence of substances but also a clear timeline of exposure. This gives a better understanding of how and when the drugs entered the system—an important distinction in many legal situations.

We pride ourselves on delivering precise results quickly. If necessary, our expert reports provide the context, explanation, and clarity needed for your case, ensuring you have the accurate, legally sound information you need to make informed decisions.
